Proud Mama

The Original Meow-Meow
Last week as a very basic and quick introduction to sewing, my daughter designed and made this stuffed animal almost completely by herself.  She designed the 7-legged cat, traced it onto tissue paper for a pattern allowing for a seam allowance.  She cut out the fabric and after a quick tutorial started sewing it together.  She stuffed it with my help and I sewed the patches, eyes, nose and mouth on before finishing up the final stitching at the top.  I forgot to mention that my daughter, who is now 8 years old, also picked out the fabrics used and the buttons for eyes herself (out of my stash).

We plan on collaborating on more stuffed animal projects together.  I'll let you know when we have an inventory if you're interested in purchasing one of these adorable one-of-a-kind handmade stuffed animals (MADE IN THE U.S.A.!)

I was feeling better recently, but I over-did it over the weekend and now am starting to get the post-nasal drip that makes me constantly clear my throat to speak clearly.  It also causes my throat to feel raw and scratchy and have a mild-to-moderate headache (as of now).  I need to focus on getting enough sleep this week.  I'm busy planning a birthday party for this Saturday and also need to clean up the house in anticipation for my parents' arrival in about 9-10 days.

My house has gotten messy again.  I started cleaning out some of the stuff in the garage, and I brought in a bunch of 66 qt. tubs to sort/throw out some of the contents, but haven't got around to it just yet.  I'm embarrassed to say that our Christmas tree is still up.  Yes, I know, pretty weird right?  Well, that's on my list of things to do...

There's about 10 million more things I could talk (type) about right now, but it's late, and I need my sleep to fight off whatever this is.

Goodnight :O)

Sorry to Leave You Hangin...

I've been feeling bad/sick again.  The day after our geocaching adventure my youngest son got sick.  He woke up with a nasty cough and was kind enough to give it to me.  I've been trying to recover, but haven't had the energy to blog (or go near my desktop computer).  I'm not feeling better, but wanted to blog to tell you about my sports injury that I received Friday night.  This is how you know that you're getting old.  I pulled a muscle in my upper arm (near my shoulder) playing baseball on the Wii.

Insert laughs here...  I'm pretty embarrassed.  I meant to look up on the internet which muscle it is, because it's very localized and small (above the bicep).  I'm not familiar with it.  The "funny" thing is, that I can't lift things (including my arm/hand) up past my shoulder without resistance (and pain).  I imagine there's something I could do for it to speed along my recovery, but it doesn't bother me (until I need to lift something).

Our family plays on our Wii every night after dinner and before bed.  Hands down our favorite game is the one that came with the game system:  Wii Sports Resort.  We can't get enough of it and I highly recommend it.

I took my son to the doctor's office last Thursday because it seemed like he was getting better, but then he started coughing again.  She said it was most likely a virus, but gave me a prescription for antibiotics, just in case it persisted and he started getting a fever.  Out of sheer desperation, I finally filled my prescription for antibiotics to see if that would help me feel better.  I've only been taking it for a couple days and haven't noticed a difference, but I'm hoping and praying to start feeling better SOON!

I've given up on trying to clean up our master bedroom in time for the Terminix-guy who's scheduled for this Wed.   I don't know WHAT I was thinking when I gave myself two weeks to clean it up!  I know that if I felt better, I could totally do it, but right now, I just don't have the energy.  The good news is that I cut down my anti-depressant to a half-pill and my "excessive" sleepiness has diminished.  The bad news is, I'm still depressed :O(  I know, I know these things take time to get in your "system."  I'm not expecting to be cured yet, but I was hoping that I'd be feeling a bit "less" depressed.  Boy, I really use "quotation" marks a lot, don't I?

I'll try not to be a stranger!

Geocaching Anyone?... Anyone?

An alligator sunning himself at the park!

Today was quite a busy day.  The morning was filled with homeschooling my two oldest children and then after lunch the whole family went to one of our favorite county parks to meet some other homeschooling families there.  But, before we left the house, my husband and I both bought the apps to do geocaching on our iPhones.  The kids and I had done it one time over the summer or maybe it was last spring, it doesn't really matter, and we fell in love with it.  "What's geocaching?" you ask.  Well, in a nutshell, it's like a scavenger hunt or treasure hunt in which you use your handheld GPS (this comes standard on the iPhones) and a geocaching website like this one where you can find out much more than I could ever tell you.  This was our family's first geocaching "mission."

The red arrow is pointing to the "cache."
Here is a photo of the family and our "treasure" box or "cache" that had a notepad and pencil inside a ziploc baggie to record that we were there along with many others who had visited this cache, dating back a few years!  Also it included just a handful of tiny kids toys.  The rule with geocaching is, if you take an item out of the cache you have to replace it with another item of similar value.  Because it was a last-minute decision for us to go geocaching today, we didn't have anything to trade, so we just peeked inside, looked at all of the items and then re-hid the old ammunition box back where we found it.

I didn't draw an arrow to my daughter's lizard on her shirt, because ironically the graphics on her shirt are of lizards, but on her left side over her heart and near her shoulder is a real lizard.  He stayed with us the entire hike.  You might be wondering how and why would a lizard be content hanging out on someones shirt for 2 hours on a walk/hike?  Well, I don't have any idea.  It seems that some of the older boys from the other homeschooling families, pick up lizards and put them on their shirts all the time.  One kid had three lizards on his shirt at one time.  All of them perfectly content.  It was cool because two of them were GREEN!  So my daughter asked nicely enough and they got a lizard for her to wear.

He started getting a little "too close" for comfort to my daughter's neck.

My daughter didn't want the lizard to crawl on her neck (again) so I said I would take the lizard for her.  She freaked out and wouldn't let me, because earlier in our hike, my husband tried to "move" the lizard for her because she was worried it was too close to her neck.  I guess the lizard eluded his grasp initially and crawled up her neck and down her arm.  This gave her the heebie-jeebies and although she didn't like it, she didn't want to give him up at the time.  So after our geocaching adventure as we were walking back to the park's playground (and our car) she let her daddy pluck the lizard off her collar and gave it to me.  I wore it for a while until we were ready to go home.

I really freaked out a few of the moms at the playground.  It was quite a while until one of them came up to me and asked me if that was a real lizard.  I took this photo with my iPhone facing me (with the flip camera function).  I had to put my hair in a ponytail because it got HOT today!  We all got some really good exercise.  Especially me after my youngest son (3 1/2) said he had to go poop after we had already started our geocaching hike.  I ran with him on my back for about 4 minutes hoping he wouldn't poop in his pants.  He made it just fine, thank goodness.  He wasn't so lucky on the day of his brother's birthday last year when we were at a different park and he go so busy playing he couldn't hold it in any longer.   Oh well, memories...  I can look back on it now and laugh :O)

Goodnight!

Clutter Galore!

Okay, I'm going to get real about my "clutter" issues.  Not that I haven't "gotten real" about them in the past, but I guess what I'm trying to say is, "Enough is enough!"  I realize that when my husband reads this, he will be saying, "THAT'S what I've been trying to tell you!"

I've given myself two weeks once again to get another room in my house cleaned up.  This time it's my master bedroom/bathroom.  Due to my last two-week deadline to get the main parts of the house clean, my bedroom has taken the brunt of the junk that I stashed to be able to have friends over on Dec. 17th.  (tecnically, so has my garage, but that's for another post.)  See more about those posts HERE  and   HERE.  My incentive this time is NOT as much fun for me as hosting a Christmas Party.

Sometime last fall I ended our relationship with Terminix which took care of keeping our house termite and pest-free.  We had two separate contracts with them:  one for the termites, the other for pests.  Believe it or not, even though we live in Florida, our house that was built in the mid-80's was built using a wood frame, not concrete block.  So termites are quite common in our neighborhood of wood-frame houses.  Even before we moved in our house had a small termite problem, it was treated, then we moved in.  We've had Terminix ever since.

But... this past year had been exceptionally difficult for us financially and when Terminix said our rates were going up...  I cut bait and bailed.  Really, what's more important groceries and gas money (not to mention paying mortgage and bills) or Pest Control and Termite Protection?  It seemed like a no-brainer.  So in December, someone from Corporate Terminix called up to woo us back.  She sweetened the deal nicely and made it more feasible for our family's budget.  I decided to definitely get the termite service back although the pest control deal wasn't as alluring.  I can buy a can of Raid and do it myself!

So I agreed to have an inspector from Terminix come to the house and tap on the baseboards with a golf club modified at the bottom with a golf ball instead of a piece of metal that you would use to hit the ball with (no idea what that part is called.)  I assumed that I could probably have my house cleaned in time for the visit which was last week, but when push came to shove, it didn't happen.  I've felt so miserable for so long, I haven't had the energy to clean out our bedroom.  Until now!  Needless to say, I cancelled the appt. last week and told the same guy who usually does these inspections when he came to our door to just do the outside of the house, we'd re-schedule for the inside.  That's when he told me that he couldn't do JUST the outside, so he left.  I told him he wouldn't want to come into our house because our whole family was sick, which was true, I wouldn't submit any of my friends to a house full of sick-germs, so why a semi-stranger?

Today the same lady called back and asked when I could re-schedule the appointment.  I looked at the calender and decided two weeks from now would be an exciting adventure in kicking some clutter out to the curb.  I needed an incentive to get the bedroom cleaned up, and now I've gotten it.  Stick around for the updates!

Goodnight!

Good News!

Hello my loyal blog readers.  I went to the doctor today and before I fill you in on my health update, can I just tell you how AWESOME my doctor is?  Okay, well,  I officially met my doctor at church.  She has two sons who are the same ages as my daughter and oldest son.  During the spring and over the summer my son who was 4 1/2, now 5 became quite the social butterfly.  He was making friends left and right (and I was keeping up with him pretty well, I might add, making new friends with these kids' moms!)  Anyway, my doctor's youngest son and my son hit it off over the summer and we had a few playdates together.  Her oldest son and my daughter get along great also.

Okay, I got a little bit sidetracked there...  Back to how awesome my doctor is.  She is genuinely concerned with how I'm doing (and everyone else she talks to, I know this because I've seen her and it's beautiful).  She LOVES Jesus and takes time out of her busy schedule where she owns her own practice to go on mission trips with others from our church.  She just returned from a trip to Nicaragua.  It was a medical mission trip where she and other doctors and nurses from the U.S. treated patients there who NEEDED medical care.  Her husband who is a cardiologist also went on this trip.  She is very caring and loving and it comes across when she speaks.  I'm a fairly new patient of hers, but I can't recommend her enough!  She has a heart of gold and I am so blessed to know her as a friend and to be her patient.  If you are in need of a general practice doctor of internal medicine and you would like her info. please email me or comment and I'll give it to you.

Now, the health update... She thinks that my cold might be allergy-related.  Which I'm relieved to hear.  After about 3 weeks of feeling awful, I was REALLY hoping that it would NOT be a sinus infection.  So she recommended I try an OTC (over the counter) antihistamine to see if I notice any difference in my symptoms.  She also recommended that I cut my current anti-depressant pills in half to help my sleepiness problem.  So, all-in-all it was good news at the doctor's office.  The bad news is that my two oldest children are sick.  Coughing and sneezing all over the house.  They haven't complained too much and don't have a fever (yet) so I haven't given them any medicine for their symptoms.  We've been stuck in the house for two days and they've been resting a lot, I'm hoping they'll get over this yucky stuff soon.

Still haven't taken down the Christmas tree.  It looks so pretty in our living room.  We still have it lighted 24/7.  And yes, my husband is still sleeping on the couch.  One of these days...  I'll take it down.

Goodnight.

I've Got a Case of the Blahs

Today possibly due to the rain, or possibly not, I've felt a bit "yuckier" than usual. You might know what they say about rainy days and Mondays... You might not, depending on your age. You can google The Carpenters for more info. if needed. Come to think of it, last Monday was also rainy. That's when the song lyrics first came to me.

Anyway, sorry about that flashback to the 1970's there. I'm showing my age a little. Not that I mind my age. I believe you are only as old as you feel (I wholeheartedly believe that).

I have an appointment with my doctor tomorrow afternoon to finally find out what is up with me. (My cold that has been around since the end of Dec.) Only my youngest son is symptom-free in our house right now. The rest of us are in some stage of coughing, sneezing and/or uncomfortableness right now. I'm trying really hard to get everyone healthy soon, so we're not quarantined in our home anymore. Yes, I realize it's only been one day, but still, I've got a bit of cabin-fever here, and we're not even snowed in!

Goodnight.

Ahh... Warm Weather...

Today it got up to 70 degrees here.  It's a heat wave folks!  Even though I was feeling crummy again today, I wanted to take full advantage of the semi-nice day we were having.  After church and then lunch I told the kids we could go to one of our favorite parks to play.  I had to make a stop at Sam's Club first, which delayed our trip to the park a little.  Oh, and before leaving for Sam's Club, I had to first make out a list/menu of the items needed for the upcoming week's worth of dinners.  I am realizing that this might be TMI (too much information) so, if I'm rambling, please feel free to skip to the next paragraph.

The kids and I enjoyed our visit to the park and the fresh air.  I haven't felt like going outside in a while because I felt yucky and because of the freezing cold weather we've been having.  Me no likey.  I was able to semi-successfully (without too many interruptions) talk on my cell phone the entire time we were at the park!  Not that I tried to be on the phone the entire time, it just happens that way when I'm talking to my good friend, Lisa.  Seriously, we just go on, and on, and on, and on...  I had no idea it had been just over an hour when I told the kids we were done and it was time to go.

I found out two awesome things I can do with my iPhone this week.  One is that I can watch movies via Netflix (with subscription) and two is that I can talk to friends/family via Skype with my iPhone.  I have used Skype in the past, but never had a camera for my computer, so I didn't get to use it very often.  So, if you don't have an iPhone and want to see me while we talk, LMK (let me know).

Last week I found a cool iPhone app called relish that has semi-gourmet recipes and you can pick out 5 for the week and get the shopping list on your phone.  The best news is this app is free for a month (which I'm just trying now) AND that you can access their entire website (with previous weeks' recipes) via their website.  So to print out a recipe I went to their website where they have lots more going on than the app offers.

Update on the Christmas tree...  I didn't take it down Saturday night OR last night... my husband has been feeling just as bad or worse than I have and to spare me his sick germs has chosen to sleep on the couch those two nights.  Right next to the Christmas tree.  So... I'll wait until he's feeling better I guess.  Another reason I don't want to do it when the kids are awake is because they want to leave it up year-round too.  I'll get too much whining and "helping" and I don't have enough energy to fight them right now.  I'd just roll over and play dead while they dismantle the tree singlehandedly.

Goodnight for now!

I'm Still Here... just barely

I got a notice from the website that hosted my blog background recently.  They said they were going to switch servers and I would need to update my code (HTML stuff).  So I thought while I'm at it, I might as well change the look of my blog, since I have to go through all of that trouble anyway.  So, I'm not sure if I did it right, but you might notice the blog looks a little different.

So, I thought I should probably post something while I'm at it also, instead of just surprising you with a new look and all (out of the blue).  To now explain my extended absence from my blog...  Ever since the end of last year I have felt sick.  It started out as a painfully scratchy throat and then turned into a sinus-related head cold.  With a little bit of minor nausea thrown in for good measure.  I have NOT been able to shake this.  I've felt miserable about 100% of the time since December (about the time I stopped posting on my blog).  I plan on calling my doctor on Monday to make an appointment because I'm really stumped on this ailment.  I was taking a decongestant and some generic Tylenol daily for at least a week.  I thought I could stave off my head cold turning into a sinus infection.  I stopped the medicine when I realized it had been a week.  Thankfully I don't think I have a sinus infection (I'm prone to those).

To top it all off, a week ago I started taking the anti-depressant that I had received in September, but was too scared to take.  I've been a bit more depressed than usual recently and I figured I would give it a try.  But, one of the side effects is excessive sleepiness.  I was aware of this before-hand and my doctor told me to take it before bed.  So I have each evening, but I'm still wiped out during the day.  It's very ironic that an anti-depressant would MAKE you sleepy!  Being depressed does that all by itself.

So besides my health issues, everything else is hunky-dory over here.  Our family got a Wii for Christmas and we play it every night before the kids go to bed.  One night this week, my husband and I played AFTER the kids were in bed.  We needed a re-match in Wii Sports Resort Bowling.  Our daughter was not asleep yet and heard the Wii remotes making their familiar sounds.  She asked us to be more quiet while we play the Wii.  We were BUSTED!  It was amazing that we worked up a sweat playing Wii Bowling!  Either it IS good exercise, or we are just really out of shape!  (could be a little of both!)

My clean house has taken a nose dive.  Mainly just the kitchen.  I've felt so miserable that I have no energy to clean it.  It's not as bad as it has been in the past, but it's still to much to have guests come over.  It even embarrasses me.

I plan on taking our Christmas tree down tonight after the kiddos are tucked in.  We've had it turned on every day since we set it up.  I LOVE the warm ambient lighting of the tiny white lights on the tree.  If it were socially acceptable (and we had more room) I would leave it up year-round.  (and if my husband didn't object.)

I'll try to not be a stranger!
